PRA's 9th Wood Coatings Congress

Novel silicon-based coating raw materials enable the formulation of high value clear coats or paints for industrial or D.I.Y application on wood or furniture. These latest generation binders comprehend high quality urethanes or aliphatic epoxides that carry silicon groups which can be cross-linked at room temperature or which are polymerised at temperatures of 60 °C to 130° C. During the curing step the silicon heads are cross-linked to an inorganic glass network, which is made of transparent and hard silicon oxide. Hence high-solid or water-based clear coats with good abrasion and with excellent chemical resistance and UV-stability can be achieved. „Aliphatic bisphenole-free silicon-epoxy-hybrid polymers"


The use of conventional epoxy compounds as raw materials in aqueous coatings is declining, because on the one hand , the hormonal activity of the often found bisphenol A unit may be harmful to humans and the environment. On the other hand, the low UV resistance of the aromatic constituents limits their uses.
The presented silicon epoxy hybrid polymers of SiliXan GmbH are both free of bisphenolic and aromatic compounds and combine the inorganic chemistry of silicon in an ideal manner with the chemistry of organic aliphatic epoxides. This novel class of raw materials allows the formulation of weathering and chemical resistant 2-component PU water systems, which dry at room temperature or at temperatures up to 250 °C. Because of the hybrid structure, the coatings exhibit a good direct adhesion and high abrasion resistance on glass and metals. Applications are wood and furniture coatings, glass coatings and transparent or pigmented coatings for corrosion protection of aluminum, steel or stainless steel.

Novel silicon-based coating raw materials enable the formulation of high-quality clear coats for automotive application. These latest generation binders comprehend high quality urethanes that carry silicon groups which react with humidity at room temperature or which are poly-condensed at temperatures of 60 °C to 180° C. The liquid lacquer formulation itself is free of unsafe isocyanates and free of nano-particles. During the curing step the silicon heads are cross-linked to an inorganic glass network, which is made of nano-scaled silicon oxide. Hence high-solid or solvent-based clear coats with good abrasion and with excellent chemical resistance and UV-stability can be achieved. The properties of selected guide formulations are shown.

Just in time for ECS 2013 the SiliXan GmbH launches their business.

Multi-functional binder concepts to revolutionise the paint and coatings industry.
"What makes our nanostructured resins and binders special: We are worldwide the only ones with such high-tech products in the paint area!", says managing director Dr. Frank Groß. The market for the company SiliXan is mainly in national and international SMEs. "There are a variety of small and medium-sized paint manufacturers that can get a great wave of innovation through the SiliXan" he says proudly.
The company focuses on binders, curing catalysts and additives that make possible a formulation of coatings with multifunctional properties.

 

Grüne Nanotechnologie"Green Nanotechnology" is the slogan under which the SiliXan sells their products. This is understood of Dr. Groß as a clear ecological orientation. "From the raw material used to the ready-manufactured product high environmental criteria are applied," according to Groß. "By intelligent development you enter the new dimension that provides a nanotechnology, in order to simplify processes, to improve products fundamentally and to be much more cost-effective and environmentally friendly at the same time. That is the goal and the future of modern nanotechnology! 

As a special highlight the SiliXan GmbH introduces starting formulations for highly scratch resistant automotive coatings. Besides that other products are shown, for example for the formulation of chromium-free corrosion protection coatings or efficient UV curing coatings. The modular design of the SiliXan chemistry offers a previously unknown combination of material properties. "In contrast to the up to now known binders, which can usually only cover one of the characteristics of decoration, protection or function, the paints that are made with SiliXan technology are capable to combine all these aspects," says Dr. Groß. He hopes for a successful show and thus a successful market entry. The SiliXan GmbH: a company from Germany's Saarland to be surely counted within the coming years!
